   Coffee and eggs by the water — and put your name in early at Fergburger, the legendary burger joint, for later; the queue is part of the legend.

   
2. ~10:00aSkyline Gondola up Bob's Peak

   The steep gondola to the lookout over town, lake, and the Remarkables — and a luge ride down the switchback track if you're game.

   
3. ~12:30pGrab that Fergburger

   Collect the burger you ordered this morning — the Big Al or the Southern Swine — and eat it lakeside. A Queenstown rite of passage.

   
4. ~2:30pThe TSS Earnslaw steamship

   The 1912 coal-fired steamer across the lake to Walter Peak high-country farm — a sheepdog and shearing show, and tea on the veranda.

   
5. ~5:00pQueenstown Gardens & the bay

   The lakeshore peninsula of giant sequoias and a disc-golf course, with the best in-town views back across the water.

   Queenstown's standout table — refined modern New Zealand from a Michelin-trained Kiwi chef, built on Central Otago produce and game. Book ahead as the trip's fixed point (NZ has no Michelin guide; this is the marquee room).

   

Queenstown is tiny and walkable — ease in with the gondola and the lake before the adventure days. Book Rata ahead; the Fergburger queue is real, so order early and circle back.

Day 1 in photos

1. ~7:00aThe road into Fiordland

   An early start for one of the world's great drives — through the Eglinton Valley, the mirror lakes, and the Homer Tunnel into the fiord. A coach lets you watch the scenery; self-drive for the stops.

2. ~11:00aMilford Sound cruise

   A boat out toward the Tasman beneath Mitre Peak — sheer 1,200-metre walls, waterfalls thundering straight into the sea, fur seals and maybe dolphins. The defining New Zealand landscape.

   
3. ~1:30pPicnic or lodge lunch

   Lunch aboard or at the visitor base — keep it simple; the scenery is the meal.

   
4. ~3:00pA short Fiordland trail

   A leg-stretch on a piece of the Milford Track or the Chasm walk on the way back — temperate rainforest, moss, and rushing water.

   
5. ~7:30pLate dinner back in town

   A relaxed Queenstown table after the long day out — Fiordland crayfish if it's on, or a Central Otago lamb with a local Pinot.

   

Milford is a long day (12+ hours round trip) but unmissable — the rainier it is, the more waterfalls, so don't be put off by cloud. A scenic flight or fly-cruise-coach combo shortens it if you'd rather.

   Queenstown is the adventure capital — a Shotover Jet through the canyons, the original Kawarau Bridge bungy, or a skydive over the lake. Pick your thrill (or watch from the bridge).

2. ~12:00pGibbston Valley lunch

   Into the 'Valley of the Vines' for a long lunch at a cellar-door restaurant — Central Otago's world-class Pinot Noir with a platter of local cheese and charcuterie.

3. ~2:30pWine tasting & the bridge

   Tastings across a couple of Gibbston estates (the cooler-climate Pinot is the star), with a wander to the historic Kawarau bungy bridge to watch the jumpers.

4. ~4:30pArrowtown

   The gold-rush village of preserved cottages, autumn-gold trees in season, and the Chinese miners' settlement — a pretty late-afternoon stroll and an old-fashioned sweet shop.

   
5. ~7:30pArrowtown or town dinner

   Dinner in a historic Arrowtown pub or back in Queenstown — game, lamb, and another glass of that Otago Pinot.

   

Pair your one big adrenaline hit with the wine valley — they're side by side. Central Otago is the world's southernmost great Pinot region; the Gibbston cellar doors make an easy, scenic afternoon.
