Build your Queenstown itinerary

Choose how many days you have and we'll lay out a day-by-day plan built around the experiences and flavors you can only get here. Pick anywhere from one to five days below.

Trip length
A tailored 3-day plan for Queenstown
Day 1

Lake, Town & the First Big View

LAKE WAKATIPU · BOB'S PEAK · SS EARNSLAW
  1. ~8:30a
  2. ~10:00a
  3. ~12:30p
  4. ~2:30p
  5. ~5:00p
  6. 7:30p

Queenstown is tiny and walkable — ease in with the gondola and the lake before the adventure days. Book Rata ahead; the Fergburger queue is real, so order early and circle back.

Day 2

Milford Sound

FIORDLAND · THE ROAD · MITRE PEAK
  1. ~7:00a
  2. ~11:00a
  3. ~1:30p
  4. ~3:00p
  5. ~7:30p

Milford is a long day (12+ hours round trip) but unmissable — the rainier it is, the more waterfalls, so don't be put off by cloud. A scenic flight or fly-cruise-coach combo shortens it if you'd rather.

Day 3

Adventure & Central Otago Wine

SHOTOVER · KAWARAU BUNGY · GIBBSTON
  1. ~9:00a
  2. ~12:00p
  3. ~2:30p
  4. ~4:30p
  5. ~7:30p

Pair your one big adrenaline hit with the wine valley — they're side by side. Central Otago is the world's southernmost great Pinot region; the Gibbston cellar doors make an easy, scenic afternoon.

The specialty of Queenstown

Eat it here, then bring it home

Queenstown pairs Central Otago's superb produce — stone fruit, lamb, and Pinot Noir — with an adventurous dining scene, while Māori tradition contributes the earth-oven hāngī.

On screen & in story

Where the stories were filmed

The Southern Alps around Queenstown became Middle-earth — Peter Jackson shot much of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit across this region.

  • The Lord of the Rings

    Glenorchy & Paradise

as Isengard, Lothlórien & Amon Hen

The beech forests and braided rivers north of Queenstown stood in for Lothlórien and the slopes of Amon Hen. Drive the Glenorchy–Paradise road; several tour operators run dedicated location trips.

    The Remarkables

    as The Misty Mountains

The saw-toothed range over Lake Wakatipu is the backdrop in countless wide shots. Best seen from the lakefront or the Remarkables ski road.
