Tokyo · Kyoto · Osaka — the classic circuit

The Golden Route of Japan

Japan's essential first journey, end to end: the neon, depth, and restaurant culture of Tokyo, the temples and gardens of Kyoto with a day among Nara's deer, and the street-food roar of Osaka — strung together by the Tōkaidō Shinkansen. The single best two weeks' worth of Japan in nine nights, with every canonical must-see and the logistics worked out.

Why these together

The Golden Route is the canonical first trip to Japan for good reason — it threads the country's three great cities along the original Tōkaidō road, now the bullet-train spine, so you see modern Tokyo, ancient Kyoto, and earthy Osaka without backtracking. Tokyo and Osaka are the two poles of Japanese city life — buttoned-up east versus boisterous west — with Kyoto's thousand years of temples between them, and easy day trips to Mt. Fuji's Hakone and Nara's great Buddha along the way.

The route, day by day

Stop 1

Tokyo — the modern capital

4 nights

Arrival & east-side Tokyo

ASAKUSA · SKYTREE · GINZA
  1. ~9:00a
  2. ~11:00a
  3. ~1:00p
  4. ~3:00p
  5. ~6:00p
  6. ~8:30p

Keep day one flexible for jet lag — Asakusa and Ginza are forgiving, and an early sushi dinner suits an early-to-bed first night.

West-side Tokyo — Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku

MEIJI · SHIBUYA · SHINJUKU
  1. ~9:00a
  2. ~10:30a
  3. ~12:30p
  4. ~2:00p
  5. ~5:00p
  6. ~7:00p
  7. ~9:00p

Tokyo's west side is the modern, fashionable city — pace it as a long stroll from Meiji's calm to Shinjuku's neon, eating your way along.

Day trip — Hakone & Mt. Fuji

HAKONE LOOP · LAKE ASHI · ONSEN
  1. ~8:00a
  2. ~10:00a
  3. ~12:30p
  4. ~2:00p
  5. ~4:00p
  6. ~7:30p

Hakone is the Golden Route's Mt. Fuji day — buy the Hakone Free Pass for the whole loop. Fuji is shy: mornings and clear winter days give the best odds, so don't bank the trip on the view.

Stop 2

Kyoto — the ancient capital

3 nights

Eastern Kyoto — Higashiyama

KIYOMIZU · GION · FUSHIMI INARI
  1. ~8:00a
  2. ~10:30a
  3. ~1:00p
  4. ~2:30p
  5. ~4:00p
  6. ~7:00p

Kyoto rewards early starts and late-afternoon temple visits when the day-trip crowds fade. Buy an ICOCA card and use taxis between clusters — the temples are spread out.

Western & northern Kyoto

ARASHIYAMA · KINKAKU-JI · NIJŌ
  1. ~8:00a
  2. ~9:00a
  3. ~11:30a
  4. ~1:00p
  5. ~3:00p
  6. ~5:00p
  7. ~7:30p

This day sweeps the western and northern highlights — start in Arashiyama at dawn, work back toward the center. Nishiki Market is the lunch-and-souvenir stop; Pontochō is the dinner atmosphere.

Day trip — Nara

TŌDAI-JI · DEER PARK · KASUGA
  1. ~9:00a
  2. ~9:45a
  3. ~11:00a
  4. ~12:30p
  5. ~2:00p
  6. ~3:30p
  7. ~6:30p

Nara is the Golden Route's great half-day add — Tōdai-ji's Buddha and the bowing deer are unmissable. It's an easy train from Kyoto or en route toward Osaka.

Stop 3

Osaka — Japan's kitchen

2 nights

Castle, culture & the street-food heart

OSAKA CASTLE · DŌTONBORI · KUROMON
  1. ~9:00a
  2. ~11:30a
  3. ~1:30p
  4. ~3:30p
  5. ~5:30p
  6. ~6:30p
  7. ~9:00p

Osaka is the anti-Tokyo — loud, friendly, food-obsessed. Dōtonbori is the must, best at night; come hungry and eat your way along the canal.

Day trip or departure — Himeji, Kobe, or fly home

HIMEJI CASTLE · or KOBE · DEPARTURE
  1. ~9:00a
  2. ~9:00a
  3. ~1:00p
  4. ~3:00p

Ending in Osaka puts you beside Kansai Airport for an easy departure, and within Shinkansen reach of Himeji's spectacular castle or Kobe's beef. Pick one as a final flourish, or keep a relaxed last day in Osaka itself.

One honest note: The Golden Route is the canonical first-timer's Japan — flexible by design: stretch it to two weeks by adding nights, or compress to a week by trimming the day trips. Spring (cherry blossom, late March–April) and autumn (foliage, November) are the prime seasons and book out months ahead. Reserve the marquee sushi and kaiseki counters and any spring/autumn lodging well in advance, and grab a Shinkansen reservation for the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka legs.
