Koh Samui balances beach ease with just enough to do — the Big Buddha and Fisherman's Village are the cultural highlights. The northwest and quieter coves are calmer than busy Chaweng.

Ang Thong is the day trip that defines Samui — a stunning protected archipelago of limestone islands and hidden lagoons. Go with a smaller-boat operator to beat the big tour crowds to the Emerald Lake.

   Into the island's green interior — the Na Muang waterfalls for a freshwater swim, and a viewpoint over the coconut-palm hills.

   A west-coast beach bar for the Gulf sunset, a cocktail in the sand.

Samui has become a serious wellness island — a spa day and a cooking class are highlights, not filler. The jungly interior with its waterfalls is a lush change from the beaches.
