Reykjavík Itinerary

1. ~9:00aIcelandic breakfast

   Skyr (the thick Icelandic cultured 'cheese') with berries and oats, a slice of dense rye baked in geothermal ground, and a strong coffee against the cold.

   
2. ~10:00aHallgrímskirkja & the tower

   The basalt-column church that crowns the city — up the tower for the panorama over the coloured rooftops to the sea and the mountains beyond.

   
3. ~11:30aLaugavegur & the street art

   The main street's design shops, wool sweaters (the lopapeysa), and the murals that brighten the side lanes — small, walkable, and surprisingly arty.

   
4. ~1:00pHarbour lunch

   The famous lamb-and-veg soup that comes with endless refills, or a bowl of plokkfiskur (creamy fish-and-potato mash) — and, if you dare, the harbour hot-dog stand the whole city queues at.

   
5. ~3:00pWhale-watching or the harbour museums

   A boat from the old harbour for minke and humpback whales (and puffins in summer), or the maritime and Saga museums if the sea's rough.

   
6. 8:00pDILL ⭐Anchor table

   Iceland's first Michelin star — New Nordic tasting built on what the island actually produces: cod, lamb, skyr, dulse, fermentation, and foraging. Small and beloved; book the moment you have dates.

   

Reykjavík is tiny and walkable — keep the city to one relaxed day. DILL books out far ahead and seats few; it's the reservation to make before anything else on this trip.

Day 1 in photos

1. ~8:30aDrive to Þingvellir

   Forty-five minutes to the rift valley where the Atlantic plates pull apart — and where the world's oldest parliament met in 930. Walk the fissure between continents.

   
2. ~10:30aGeysir & Strokkur

   The geothermal field that gave us the word 'geyser' — Strokkur erupts every few minutes, a column of boiling water flung skyward. Stand upwind.

   
3. ~12:00pGullfoss

   The 'golden falls' thundering in two great tiers into a canyon — often rainbow-hung in spray, and ringed with ice in winter.

   
4. ~1:30pTomato-farm or country lunch

   Lunch at a geothermal greenhouse tomato farm on the route — tomato soup with fresh-baked bread in among the vines — a uniquely Icelandic stop.

5. ~4:00pA geothermal soak

   The Secret Lagoon or the Laugarvatn Fontana steam baths on the way back — a hot soak under an open sky as the light fades.

6. ~8:00pDinner back in the city

   Back in Reykjavík: Arctic char or slow-cooked lamb shank at a snug downtown bistro, with an Icelandic craft beer.

   

The Golden Circle is the classic loop and easily self-driven — go anti-clockwise to hit Þingvellir before the coaches. In winter, leave generous daylight buffers; the sun's up only a few hours.

1. ~8:00aDrive the south coast

   East under the glaciers along the ring road — the most cinematic stretch in the country, waterfalls and volcanoes strung along the route.

2. ~9:30aSeljalandsfoss & Skógafoss

   The waterfall you can walk behind (Seljalandsfoss — bring a rain shell), then the broad thundering curtain of Skógafoss with its near-permanent rainbow.

   
3. ~12:30pLamb soup in Vík

   Lunch in the tiny clifftop village of Vík — the hearty lamb soup again (you won't tire of it), with the black coast laid out below.

   
4. ~2:00pReynisfjara black-sand beach

   The basalt-column sea cliffs and the roaring black-pebble beach — stunning and dangerous; stay well back from the 'sneaker' waves.

   
5. ~9:00pNorthern Lights hunt

   Out into the dark away from town with an aurora forecast in hand (Sept–April) — the green curtains overhead are the trip's once-in-a-lifetime payoff. A guide knows where the sky's clearest.

6. ~7:00pEarly dinner before the hunt

   A warm meal before heading out — a langoustine bisque or arctic char — timed early so you're on the road for full dark.

The south coast is a long day — start early and don't rush Reynisfjara's waves, which are genuinely deadly. The aurora needs dark, clear skies and a little luck; build in a backup night if you can.
