Day 1

Taormina, the Greek Theatre & the Ionian Coast

TAORMINA · TEATRO ANTICO · ISOLA BELLA
  1. ~9:00a
  2. ~10:00a
  3. ~11:30a
  4. ~1:30p
  5. ~3:30p
  6. ~7:30p
  7. 8:30p

Taormina is Sicily's clifftop showpiece — the ancient Greek theatre with its Etna-and-sea view is unmissable, and the town is loveliest early and at the evening passeggiata. The cove of Isola Bella below offers the swim. Sicilian food and Etna wines are a highlight throughout.

Day 2

Mount Etna: Volcano, Lava & Wine

ETNA · LAVA FLOWS · ETNA WINE ROAD
  1. ~8:30a
  2. ~12:00p
  3. ~1:30p
  4. ~4:00p
  5. ~8:00p

Etna is a full, thrilling day — go up the volcano with the official mountain guides (dress warmly), then descend into its acclaimed wine country, where old vines on black volcanic soil make some of Italy's most distinctive reds and whites. Access up high varies with the volcano's activity.

Day 3

Baroque Sicily — Syracuse, Noto & the Southeast

ORTIGIA · SIRACUSA · NOTO
  1. ~9:30a
  2. ~11:30a
  3. ~1:30p
  4. ~3:30p
  5. ~6:30p
  6. ~8:00p

The southeast is Sicily's baroque heartland — ancient Syracuse (Ortigia and the Greek theatre) and the golden rebuilt town of Noto are the highlights, with superb seafood, almond sweets, and Modica chocolate. The honey-colored stone glows best in late-afternoon light.

The specialty of Sicily

Eat it here, then bring it home

Sicilian food is one of Italy's richest and most distinctive — a sun-drenched layering of Greek, Arab, Norman, and Spanish influences, heavy on eggplant, seafood, citrus, almonds, and pistachios. The island's sweets, street food, and volcanic wines are in a class of their own.
