St. Moritz Itinerary

1. ~8:30aAn alpine breakfast

   Bircher muesli, Engadiner nut tart (Nusstorte), and a coffee with the frozen lake and peaks in the window.

2. 9:30aUp to Corviglia

   The funicular and cable car to the slopes and viewpoints above town — skiing in winter, or the high panorama of the Engadin lakes and 4,000 m peaks in summer.

   
3. ~12:30pA mountain-restaurant lunch

   A sun-terrace lunch high on the mountain — at the famous El Paradiso or a gourmet berghütte, with capuns or a fondue and a Swiss white.

4. ~3:00pThe lake & the town

   A walk or (winter) a horse-drawn sleigh across the frozen lake, then the boutiques of town — St. Moritz is a serious luxury-shopping address.

   
5. ~5:00pAprès & a spa

   Champagne après-ski, then the hotel spa and thermal waters — St. Moritz has taken the waters since the Bronze Age.

   
6. 8:30pIGNIV or a grand-hotel tableAnchor table

   Andreas Caminada's IGNIV (shared fine dining) at the Grand Hotel, or one of the Palace's celebrated rooms. The marquee meal; book ahead, smart dress.

   

St. Moritz is where alpine winter glamour was invented — it's as much about the scene, spa, and dining as the slopes. The light here (the locals trademark the 'Champagne climate') is famously clear and bright.

Day 1 in photos

   The cable car to the Diavolezza glacier station for the breathtaking face-to-face with Piz Bernina and Piz Palü — the great glaciated giants of the Engadin.

   
2. ~10:30aSki, glacier walk, or snowshoe

   The long glacier ski run (or a guided glacier walk / snowshoe in the right season) beneath the ice faces — high-alpine drama at its purest.

3. ~1:00pA glacier-station lunch

   Hearty mountain fare with a glacier view — barley soup, rösti, and a warming Pflümli.

   
4. ~3:00pThe Bernina Express line

   A leg of the UNESCO Bernina railway — the dramatic spiralling viaducts and glacier passes of one of the world's most scenic train lines.

   
5. ~7:30pA fondue chalet dinner

   A cosy timber stube for a bubbling cheese fondue or raclette, with kirsch and the alpine night outside.

Diavolezza offers the Engadin's most spectacular high-mountain scenery. The Bernina Express is a bucket-list rail journey even as a short leg — reserve the panorama car ahead.

1. ~9:30aThe lakes & Sils Maria

   The string of Engadin lakes and the village of Sils Maria, where Nietzsche summered — a flat, beautiful lakeside walk beneath the peaks.

   
2. ~11:30aSgraffito villages

   The Engadin's distinctive painted houses — thick-walled, with sgraffito decoration scratched into the plaster — in villages like Zuoz and Guarda, among the prettiest in the Alps.

3. ~1:00pA village-inn lunch

   Engadin specialties — capuns (chard-wrapped dumplings), pizzoccheri, and air-dried Bündnerfleisch — in a centuries-old stube.

   
4. ~3:00pThe Bregaglia & Soglio

   Down the valley toward Italy to Soglio, the village Segantini called 'the threshold of paradise,' clinging to the mountainside among chestnut woods.

   
5. ~7:30pDinner back in town

   A refined Engadin dinner — local lamb or game and a Graubünden red (the valley makes superb Pinot Noir).

   

The Engadin's painted sgraffito villages are a cultural highlight beyond the ski glamour — Guarda and Zuoz are gems. The valley's own Pinot Noir is a pleasant surprise worth seeking out.
