Trip length
A tailored 3-day plan for Venice
Day 1

San Marco & the Heart of the City

PIAZZA SAN MARCO · DOGE'S PALACE · RIALTO
  1. ~8:00a
  2. 8:30a
  3. ~11:30a
  4. ~1:30p
  5. ~4:00p
  6. 8:00p

San Marco belongs to the early risers and the after-dark wanderers — the day-trip crush peaks 11am–4pm. Pre-book the basilica to skip the line, and embrace getting lost; the wrong calle is usually the best one.

Day 2

Dorsoduro & the Quiet Sestieri

DORSODURO · ZATTERE · SAN POLO
  1. ~9:30a
  2. ~11:30a
  3. ~1:00p
  4. ~3:00p
  5. ~6:30p

Dorsoduro and San Polo are where Venetians actually live — quieter, cheaper, and full of the best bàcari. Pace the churches; the Frari and San Rocco together are a lot of sublime in one afternoon.

Day 3

The Lagoon Islands

MURANO · BURANO · TORCELLO
  1. ~9:00a
  2. ~11:00a
  3. ~1:00p
  4. ~3:00p
  5. ~7:30p

The islands are a full vaporetto day — buy a day pass and go Murano → Burano → Torcello in order. Start early; the light on Burano is best before the afternoon boats arrive, and Torcello shuts down by evening.

The specialty of Venice

Eat it here, then bring it home

Venetian food is lagoon food — seafood, mainland rice, and the cicchetti culture of the bàcari wine bars, a world apart from the rest of Italy.
