Zermatt is entirely car-free — you arrive by train from Täsch. Do Gornergrat on the clearest morning for the Matterhorn; clouds often gather on the peak by afternoon, so go early.

   The highest cable-car station on the continent at 3,883 m on the Klein Matterhorn — ride the crystal-glass-floor 'Crystal Ride' cabin up the final stage.

   Year-round snow up here — toboggan and snow tubing, or (skiers) the run over to Cervinia in Italy for a pasta lunch and back.

   A mountain restaurant at Trockener Steg or Furi — a fondue or raclette scraped molten onto potatoes, the Swiss alpine classic.

   An easy downhill trail back toward the village past the Gorner gorge's roaring meltwater and a suspension footbridge.

It's deep-winter cold at 3,883 m even in summer — bring layers, gloves, and sunglasses for the glare. If clouds sit on the high peaks, flip this with a lower-altitude day; the view is the whole point.

   The funicular and cable car up the Sunnegga–Rothorn side for a different angle on the Matterhorn and the start of the lakes trail.

   The signature day hike (about 2.5 hours) past five alpine tarns — Stellisee gives the most famous Matterhorn reflection of all. Mostly downhill and family-friendly.

   A berghütte by the trail — älplermagronen (the Alpine mac-and-cheese with apple sauce), or a plate of air-dried Valais meats.

   Down to Leisee for a lakeside laze, then back to the village for the hotel's spa and sauna with the peak in the window.

   A village restaurant for Walliser specialities — raclette du Valais, dried-meat platters, and a glass of the local Fendant or Dôle.

The Five Lakes is the loveliest easy hike in Zermatt — Stellisee's reflection is best in the still morning air, so start early. Sturdy shoes and a light layer; mountain weather turns fast.
